Week 14 is here!

I can't believe it has been a full 10 weeks since I told Patrick I was pregnant!  It has flown by.  And we still have so much more to do!

Baby Kirby this week:

  • Hair is staring to grow on the baby's head, and eyebrows are starting to form, too!
  • The skin is very translucent right now, so all the veins would be visible.
  • The head is now about the size of a gumball, and is continuing to become more proportionate to the rest of the body.
  • The baby's arms are now the proper length for it's body, but the legs are still a little short!
  • Eyelids are formed, but they are fused right now....but baby can still begin to move it's eyes around.
  • Bones are mostly formed at this point, but will continue to harden throughout the rest of the pregnancy.
  • The kidneys are functioning and making urine, and meconium (the first poop) is forming in the intestines.
  • And my favorite:  the baby can now frown, grimace, squint, and make other faces!

And about me.....

I think I'm finally over the worst of the morning sickness!  I still have a little nausea, but no more throwing up.  And although I am still tired, I am finally starting to feel like doing a little more around the house and doing some errands.

Which means Patrick and I can finally start doing some shopping for the baby, which I am SO excited about!!  Now if we can just find the time between our work schedules.....

The big items we hope to pick out soon:  the crib, a light fixture for the nursery, and a rocker/glider.

Then in a few weeks (once we know the sex of the baby) we can start looking for more accents, bedding, etc for the nursery.

Thanks for reading!

1st trimester is now over!  Week 13 is the beginning of the 2nd trimester, which is a relief!

Sorry for the poor quality of the picture....until Patrick gets his real camera set up on our computer, these will be iPhone pics!  Plus this was after the Braves game....

The baby is now about 3 inches long, and has been compared to:

a KIWI

a PEACH

and even a SHRIMP!

(All the shrimp pics were too gross, couldn't bring myself to post one!)

During week 13, I have the following updates on little Baby Kirby:

Head is now only about 1/3 of the body, versus being the largest part before!
The vocal cords are forming, along with baby teeth!
Bones are beginning to form in the tiny arms and legs.
Intestines are now moving from the umbilical cord where they form, into the belly.
Fingerprints are already formed on those tiny baby fingers!
He or she can open and close it’s fists, and can make sucking movements with it’s mouth
The kidneys and the urinary tract are now functional.
Soft hair called “lanugo” is starting to cover the baby’s body.

And as for me at Week13.....
I don't want to jinx myself but the morning sickness seems to be improving.  Hopefully I'll still be saying that at the next post!
I'm still pretty tired most of the time, definitely am having more trouble staying up all night at work!  Baby is not a fan of night shift....that is when the  nausea still seems to flare up.
My clothes are starting to fit differently.  I haven't bought any maternity clothes yet, but I only have certain shirts I feel comfortable wearing in public!  With all my friends and family, everyone knows that "pudge" is a baby forming, but to everyone else I just look chubby....
Nursery color picked, paint is bought!  It will be a neutral silvery grey called "Sparrow," and Patrick can claim the honor of finding the perfect color.  :)  We will bring in lots of color and fun with accents once we know whether baby Kirby is a he or a she!

Patrick and I have decided to take on the adventure of cloth diapering.  The environmental aspect is wonderful, but the financial aspect is even better!  I'm lucky enough that one good friend at work does this with her daughter who is now 10 months old (time flies!) and my other good friend at work who is currently pregnant plans to do the same.  So, I have some go-to people that will help along the way.

See y'all next week with more updates!!

Big News.....!

Hi to all friends and family who read my occasional blog posts...sorry I haven't been better about updating!  But now there is finally some news worth blogging about.....

There will be a new Braves fan joining us in October!

My due date is October 21, 2013 which means I am currently12 weeks pregnant.  Patrick and I could not be more excited about this next step in our lives, and I hope to share the progress with our friends and family through this blog.  That means hopefully I'll be updating much more frequently than before!

I plan to (try) and post weekly pictures along with some details about the baby.  If anyone has any requests/suggestions about items to include in these posts, please share!

To start out, here is my first US picture from my 6 week appointment where the pregnancy was confirmed:

At this 6 week point, the baby was only the size of a grain of rice.  But if you look closely, you can see tiny little buds where the hands and feet will form!  We were able to see a tiny flicker inside the chest, which was the heart beat.  At that point I was feeling great, only tired!

I went yesterday for a checkup and got another US.  A HUGE difference between 6 weeks and 12 weeks!!

At 12 weeks the baby is now about 2 inches long ,and is compared to the size of a plum.  Amazing how you can already see the forming of the eyes, the nose, the mouth, etc.  All looks good at this point, the doctor says no signs of any problems!

As my body has been working overtime to grow this baby, I continue to need a lot of extra sleep!  And all the hormones have unfortunately given me some trouble with morning sickness.  But as I move out of the first trimester, I hope this will improve!  Luckily Patrick has been wonderful at picking up the slack for me around the house.

My next doctors appointment will be in about one month, and they say we can probably find out the sex at that appointment....can't wait!!  In the meantime, here are some pics of my "baby bump," which right now just feels to me like a full belly which means it takes me 3 times as long to find outfits I feel comfortable in!

And a very cool side note....a good friend at work found out she is pregnant and we have the same due date....what are the odds?!  So I look forward to comparing our pregnancies as this goes along...
